If patients/families were to read their charts would they recognize their plans? Are the plan goals actually their goals, or are they goals we have created for them? How are they to achieve these goals if they lack the motivation to do so? Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented method of communication giving particular attention to assessing and strengthening motivation to take action.
