Florida Veterans Foundation Chairman Sanchez Announces Free Cookout for Homeless Veterans at Lake Ella

The cookout will be on Thursday, February 27th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will take place along the North end of Lake Ella (behind the American Legion Post # 13 at The Hootch next to the helicopter). It will be hosted by the Florida Veterans Foundation, Inc; a 501 (c ) (3) non-profit in direct support to the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs helping Veterans throughout the state of Florida.

Big Bend Hospice’s Valor Program will once again serve

as a participant in the annual Stand Down event.

The purpose of the February 27th free cookout is to support the 2nd Annual Veterans Homeless Stand Down scheduled for April 4-6. The cookout is one of a number of events that build-up to the North Florida Homeless Veterans Stand Down, to be held at the North Florida Fairgrounds. During the three-day event, veterans will be offered a range of services designed to help them escape the difficult challenges of being homeless. Veterans who are living on the streets or who do not have permanent housing will receive  free access to two nights of shelter, three days of food, showers, haircut/women’s’ hair styling, food, clothing, personal care items, medical services, veterinary services for pets, pet therapy, legal and mental health services, job counseling and a variety of gift cards and more.

The Stand Down also provides veterans the opportunity to seek housing through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Big Bend Housing Coalition and Family Endeavors. Each of these organizations has federal funding or grants that seek to help homeless veterans (those with families, too) achieve permanent housing for themselves.

In addition to getting a hot meal at the free cookout on the 27th of February, homeless veterans will also have a chance to pre-register for the April 4-6 Stand Down. Pre-registering will help ensure access to legal services or the Court and help homeless veterans prequalify for permanent housing.
