The topic of death will be placed at the center of coffee house conversation on Tuesday, June 10. “Coffee, Tea and Mortality,” organized by Avow, seeks to engage community members in an open conversation about life and death in a comfortable cafe setting.

The gathering is inspired by the Death Café concept which began in England in 2011, and has since crossed the Atlantic to be offered in a number of cities throughout the US. At Death Cafés, people – many times strangers – gather to enjoy refreshments and discuss death. The common objective of these gatherings is to raise death awareness and encourage participants to make the most of their (finite) lives.

Death Café hosts get the conversation started and impose no agenda or philosophy. Organizing representatives from Avow will follow this format at the Naples gathering and expect the conversation may touch on the practical, emotional and spiritual aspects of dying and death. Avow representatives will encourage participants to keep an open mind and all spiritual, religious and end-of-life beliefs will be honored.

“When we learned about the Death Café movement, it just made sense for Avow to organize one locally,” stated Karen Rollins, President and CEO. “As providers of hospice care we are facilitating conversations about death and dying every day. What makes our talks with families most difficult is when death is the white elephant in the room. By talking about death matters before you find yourself or a loved one facing end of life, you have a much better chance of dying well.”

“Coffee, Tea and Mortality” will be held on Tuesday, June 10, at 3:30 PM at SECOND CUP cafe located in The Shops at Mercato in Naples. No fee to attend, RSVP encouraged, call 239-649-3689. This program is not recommended for those presently engaged in the grieving process. Support programs for those in grief are available from Avow; call 239-261-4404 or visit avowcares.org for more information.

Avow was founded in 1983 as Collier County’s original, nonprofit hospice. Today, Avow’s companies care not only for those who are terminally ill, but also for those who have serious and chronic illnesses or who have suffered great loss.
