Distress, in this context, can occur as a result of many situations, including social isolation, stress associated with very long and complicated treatment for an illness, guilt and regrets, unfinished/unresolved relationships, and fear associated with acknowledging death is imminent. Distress can also lead to or exacerbate behaviors such as substance misuse, suicidal ideation, and agitation and/or aggression. This webinar will look closely at addressing distress as it relates to the provision of high-quality end-of-life care.

Interacting with people who don’t think the same way you do may not be so easy. The hospice promise is to help everyone to have their best possible end-of-life experience, regardless of who they are, their backgrounds, their beliefs, or similarities and differences. Sometimes the people who speak loudest about this as their guiding principle have the most difficult time with it. It can be very easy to justify or rationalize our beliefs as being “right” which can lead to feeling extremely uncomfortable in the presence of those who think differently. Will a political sign in the front yard change how you present or perform when you enter that home? This webinar will explore how to approach these types of situations and how to stay on top of, maneuver around, or suspend judgment in order to provide optimal care to all.

Emotional intelligence is a vital skillset for thriving in both professional and personal relationships, and social awareness — the third quadrant of emotional intelligence — plays a pivotal role in connecting meaningfully with others. Critical thinking is the art and science behind the provision of the best possible end-of-life care. Part of this process is continually asking “Is this really true?”. In end-of-life care, staff want to help people who are suffering and who frequently ask questions with no definitive answer. “Can my husband hear me?” “Why did my husband die after I left the room? I promised him I would be at his side.” In attempting to provide comfort, “hospice urban myths” have evolved over the years. These myths have been passed along so many times that they begin to feel as if they are actually true, when in fact, that is often not the case. This webinar will look at many of these myths and whether they are really true. It will explore better ways to support people when life events feel unfair or hopeless.
