Emotional support is an important and useful technique used by all team members, yet it shouldn’t be confused with counseling.  Clearly, Medicare requires that counseling is provided, but what exactly does this mean and who are the counselors?  This webinar will explore the variables inherent in our role as counselors and present useful theoretical frameworks and skills that can be used to move beyond supportive interventions.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Defining counseling associated with the roles of social workers and chaplains
  • How to use “scope of practice” to frame and maximize care
  • Highlights of useful techniques and interventions:
    • Motivational interviewing to develop plans that people are motivated to achieve – no more noncompliance!
    • Useful cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions
    • The Dual Process Model for Grief – no more Kubler-Ross stages
  • Ways to make family meetings a regular part of our work
  • TAKE-AWAY TOOLKIT
    • Handout with additional lecture notes
    • Extensive resource list and links to video demonstrations on specific interventions
    • A guide for which interventions work best in specific hospice situations
