UNDERSTANDING HOSPICE CAHPS STAR RATINGS

August 2022 was the maiden voyage of hospice star ratings on Medicare Care Compare. After years of discussion at CMS about star calculation, they announced in the FY 2022 that Star Ratings would be associated with hospice CAHPS measures beginning in 2022. This session will review the nuts and bolts of hospice star rating calculations, their impact on the hospice provider community, and strategies for performance improvement.
A little about our speaker…
Dr. Jennifer Kennedy is the Vice President for Quality and Standards at CHAP and a nationally recognized hospice expert. She has more than 35 years of experience as a leader and nurse in diverse healthcare settings and has worked in hospice and palliative care for the last 20+ years. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing, a dual master’s degree in health education and case management, and a doctoral degree in health care education and policy and is a certified healthcare compliance professional. Jennifer is the lead for the CHAP quality team and interacts with CMS and their contractors related to hospice regulatory and quality issues for hospice, home health, home infusion, pharmacy, and durable medical equipment. She collaborates with the CHAP Center for Excellence an education content developer and also serves as faculty. Jennifer is a member of the ANA’s national palliative nursing task group and has been honored by the UK’s St. Christopher’s Hospice as a Nursing Pioneer for their Palliative Care Nursing Project. She speaks at for national and state events and teaches Graduate Health Care Administration courses at the university level.
