Over the past year, privacy has become increasingly important.  News stories have detailed significant privacy breaches, including a tech company breach that impacted 87 million users.  In the healthcare sector, there have been multiple healthcare provider breaches, ranging from a system breach of 1.4 million records to multiple providers being victimized by ransomware attacks.  Due to the frequency and severity of these attacks, the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Civil Rights (OCR) has been steadily increasing enforcement, including the second round of HIPAA audits and increasing fines for covered entities and business associates.

In this environment of increased risks and penalties, providers must be prepared.  Noncompliance can lead to fines and lawsuits, but it also puts patients’ information at risk.  In 2018, the OCR imposed fines of $3.5 million and $4.3 million in addition to closing a $16 million settlement that affected 79 million people.  This webinar will review HIPAA requirements, the current enforcement trends, and threats.  It will also cover recent OCR audits to identify common mistakes, including the importance of a risk assessment and why failing to perform one can fundamentally undermine compliance efforts.
