Statement of Purpose: Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Hospice aide provides personal and basic medical care services for patients within the CNA scope of practice and is responsible for carrying out the plan of care to enhance patient and family comfort.

 

Primary tasks, duties, and responsibilities:

  1. Promotes and practices the hospice mission and core values, and follows all policies and procedures of Tidewell Hospice.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to the Florida Nurse Practice Act, Standards of Practice of Hospice Nursing as well as legal, regulatory and CHAP requirements.
  3. Provides basic personal care such as bed, shower or tub bath, oral hygiene, toileting, skin care, ambulation, and exercise as directed by the RN and assigned by the POC.
  4. Measures and records oral, rectal, and axillaries temperatures, pulse, and respiration, and blood pressure when ordered within the training limitations of the CNA.
  5. Assists with household tasks directly essential to patient’s health, i.e. cleaning, supply organization, meal preparation and/or assistance as per POC.
  6. Responsible for documenting patient care timely and appropriately while ensuring confidentiality.
  7. Communicates and regularly updates the RN regarding observations, progress/deterioration and comfort needs of the patient.
  8. Participates in interdisciplinary case conferences, in-service education programs and performance improvement activities as required by Tidewell Hospice policies and patient needs.
  9. Assists in clerical administrative duties, performance/completion of Life Safety Inspections and disaster preparedness.
  10. Remains awake and alert during entire shift; demonstrates responsibility in work attendance.

 

Physical Requirements:

  1. Frequently lift/carry up to 25 pounds independently and utilize proper techniques / assistance to lift greater weights, including the human body.
  2. Ability to turn, reposition, and assist patients to transfer and ambulate.
  3. Visual acuity, (including near/far vision) color discrimination and depth perception; other senses necessary for patient observation, communication and driving, including touch, hearing, and smell.
  4. Sitting, standing, walking and driving for prolonged periods of time.
  5. Frequently stoop, reach, push and pull during the provision of patient care.
  6. Fine motor skills to administer patient care services, treatments and procedures and grasp objects, including medical supplies/equipment and the human body.
  7. Ability to work 12 hour shifts, including overnight, weekends and holidays.
  8. Must remain awake and alert during entire shift.

 

Working Conditions: Subject to occasional exposure to hazards associated with blood, hazardous substance and waste and potentially infectious materials.

 

Educational/Professional:

  1. Florida state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  2. Minimum 75 education hours of theory and clinical in preparation for CNA license.
  3. Minimum one year recent full time experience providing direct patient care; previous Hospice or acute care experience preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Ability to relate to and provide care to patients with acute, chronic and life limiting illness regardless of background.
  2. Able to safely use equipment needed for patient care such as: bedside commode, bed pan, lift, wheelchair, electric and semi-electric bed, walker.
  3. Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  4. Demonstrate an effective working knowledge of computers and clinical information systems.
  5. Solid keyboarding skills with free-form and data entry proficiency of 30-35 wpm.
  6. Speaks, writes, reads and comprehends English. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
  7. Possesses valid Florida driver’s license and current auto insurance.
  8. Must remain awake and alert during entire shift.
