The Advanced Hospice Worker:

Cutting Edge Psycho-Spiritual Skills for Complex Situations

Psychosocial, Bereavement and Spiritual counselors are often called upon to demonstrate leadership within their interdisciplinary team by guiding interventions toward the achievement of patient/family goals. Yet it is not uncommon to hear from patient’s family members “What are you going to do about this?” placing all team members in a crisis intervention mode.

This two day intensive workshop will address advanced skill sets required for the hospice team members (Psychosocial, Spiritual and Nursing) to transform from a reactive approach to a pro-active approach by focusing on developing advanced intervention skills.

Day One will focus on critical skill sets necessary for higher level interventions from both the individual and interdisciplinary perspectives. Various models, approaches and intervention techniques will be introduced and practiced throughout the day.

These skills will then become the basis for raising the bar even higher on Day Two, as we introduce multiple challenging scenarios which will allow the participants to practice and master these skills when working with people who are ill and their circles of support. Participants will apply the techniques demonstrated on Day 1 in an intensive skills-focused learning environment with comprehensive feedback.

Case studies will focus on the following complicated situations which challenge all hospice clinicians when helping those at the end of life. Scenarios discussed will include those who:

  • have a lack of faith or belief system
  • use alcohol and drugs as a coping system
  • feel hopeless, helpless or have a lack of meaning in their life
  • exhibit grief vs depression
  • lack decisional capacity
  • have personality disorders

This two day seminar will equip participants to face those complex situations and become leaders ready to respond to complex situations.
