Medicare spending for hospice care has increased dramatically in recent years – and so has hospice scrutiny. It is imperative for hospice programs to implement a compliance program to protect their operations from fraud and abuse. Understanding hospice’s Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report (PEPPER) can facilitate prioritizing areas on which to focus auditing and monitoring.
PEPPER for hospices has been distributed since 2012. It provides comparative billing data in setting-specific domains considered at risk for abuse or improper Medicare payment.
