Webinar 1: Helplessness & Hopelessness: The Volunteer Role in Finding Meaning

Richard Bach, author of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” has said, “Here is a test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished: If you´re alive it isn’t.” Within that quote lies the spirit of hospice and a special gift volunteers can share. It is difficult to accomplish much in the presence of overwhelming helplessness and hopelessness. But, it is time to get beyond the notion that “I am just a volunteer” and explore your potential. This webinar will examine the link between finding meaning in loss and redefining hope, and address the volunteer’s role in assisting clients to feel they are helpful to those they love…in small, yet important, ways.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • How helplessness and hopelessness can prevent people from living fully for the time that remains
  • Finding meaning in loss
  • “Door openers” and skills that can assist with moving the flow of conversation instead of backing away
  • Techniques to make individuals and families feel useful and helpful, even when confronting serious illnesses

Webinar 2: Taking Volunteer Communication Skills to the Next Level!

This webinar will focus on skills that allow us to connect more deeply with people who are ill and their circles of support. Join us to learn how to work more effectively in some of the most challenging situations, including:

  • Clients who are unable to speak, but have some awareness, (e.g. ALS, stroke, etc.)
  • Angry people
  • What to do when someone says, “You can’t mention hospice, cancer, or dying.”
  • How to maintain personal and professional boundaries when working with complex situations

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Common challenges volunteers face
  • Skills, techniques, and interventions to help address challenges and identify opportunities for patients/families
  • Being helpful to people who cannot speak
  • Techniques to de-escalate angry people
  • Importance of maintaining personal and professional boundaries and how to catch ourselves when we are “getting too close”

TAKE-AWAY TOOLKITS FOR BOTH WEBINARS

  • Detailed handout with additional lecture notes
  • Comprehensive list of resources for additional exploration and learning
  • Discussion guide to use following the webinar
  • Group exercises to use before and after the webinar with debriefing instructions included
