This is particularly
important on March 31st!
Earlier this month
NHPCO and Caring Connections announced the advance care planning awareness
campaign and the new LIVE awareness ribbon. Just this week, NHPCO has received

Over the course of
the next week, there will be increased media attention on end-of-life issues.
This is due, in part, to the release of books by the husband and the family of
“The white awareness
ribbon reminds us to share our wishes before a crisis. Regardless of what care
you would or would not want at the end of your life, give you loved ones a gift
by making your wishes known. Such a gift

The advance care
planning ribbon was created by NHPCO to help people focus on the message: “It’s
About How You LIVE.” The white awareness ribbon reflects the message of peace
long associated with the dove. Suggestions and materials to help with outreach
in your community are available online:
*Engagement Cards <http://www.nhpco.org/files/public/pin_engagement_card.pdf>
– explaining the
awareness ribbon and the LIVE message. This PDF contains four cards on an 8½”
by 11” page. Print them on cardstock and then attach the awareness ribbon pin or
a simple white ribbon of your own.
*Awareness Flyer <http://www.nhpco.org/files/public/LIVE_ribbon_flyer.pdf>
– use this 8 ½” by
11” flyer on bulletin boards in your office, local library, grocery store,
faith community…anywhere a public interest notice might be found.
*LIVE Promise Card <http://www.caringinfo.org/files/public/pledgecard_2up.pdf>
– engage others to
make the "LIVE Promise" and talk to loved ones about their
end-of-life wishes.
*Let local media and other audiences
know about your local efforts that are part of this national outreach campaign
by sending them a ribbon.
*Communications Section <http://www.nhpco.org/i4a/pages/Index.cfm?pageID=4806>
of nhpco.org offers materials to use in outreach surrounding this one-year
anniversary -- put together a folder for elected officials, other healthcare
providers, or the media. Available materials include a suggested op-ed,
information on artificial nutrition and hydration, tips for working with the
media, and LIVE Campaign resource links.
*A local business or individual contributor may be interested in
supporting your awareness campaign efforts by purchasing the ribbon lapel pins
<http://eseries.nhpco.org/eseries/source/Orders/index.cfm?ETask=1&Task=1&SEARCH_TYPE=FIND&FindIn=0&FindSpec=820911> or printing the engagement cards for your
organization. Offer to put their logo or message of support on the backside of
the engagement card. You may also add a message of your own on the reverse side
of the engagement card!
*Share white ribbons with families, friends, staff, and volunteers
and encourage them to wear a ribbon on March 31 (or any time they want to help
promote better advance care planning!)
